Spotify's Fresh Finds Forward: what the new programme for independent artists actually gives you

Spotify will invite about 10,000 independent artists a year from its Fresh Finds playlists into a 12-month programme of studio time, software, therapy and promotion. There is no cash in it, the biggest perks are US-only, and the real prize is the editorial attention that comes with membership.

Key facts

  • What happened: on 17 Sep 2026 Spotify launched Fresh Finds Forward, a support programme for about 10,000 emerging independent artists a year, open to artists added to a Fresh Finds playlist from 1 Jan 2026.
  • How: eligible artists get an invitation in Spotify for Artists and, once they join, 12 months of benefits: free studio time (US-based artists only), LANDR Studio Pro, six months of Splice and of BetterHelp therapy, a profile badge, events and early access to Spotify tools.
  • Why it matters: Spotify discloses no cash and no total value. The programme is worth most as a signal of editorial attention, and it ties independent artists more closely to Spotify and its partners.

Spotify launched Fresh Finds Forward on 17 September 2026, a programme it says will support about 10,000 emerging independent artists a year. It is built on Fresh Finds, the editorial playlists Spotify's editors use to showcase unsigned, independent and early-career acts. Joe Hadley, Spotify's global head of music content and partnerships, says the artists taking part "aren't just getting a playlist placement". So what are they getting, and who gets in?

Who is eligible, and how do you join?

You can't apply. Artists added to a Fresh Finds playlist from 1 January 2026 onwards are invited through Spotify for Artists, and notifications started going out on launch day. Spotify's support page says the invitation goes to admin users on the artist team, joining is optional, and the programme covers artists on "any global Fresh Finds playlists", subject to eligibility criteria the page refers to but doesn't spell out. Benefits run for 12 months from the day you join.

If you haven't been playlisted, the only route in is the usual one: pitch an unreleased track to the editors through Spotify for Artists and hope they pick it.

The numbers don't quite line up. Music Business Worldwide reports that more than 18,000 artists were featured on Fresh Finds in 2024 alone, and that Spotify hasn't said how it gets from that pool down to 10,000. Neither Spotify page answers that question either.

What support comes with it?

Spotify's announcement calls these examples, not a full list:

  • Studio time, free, at Electric Lady Studios in New York, The Lighthouse at Ocean Way in Nashville or Spotify Studios in Los Angeles. Only US-based artists qualify.
  • Software: 12 months of LANDR Studio Pro and six months of Splice's Creator plan, which the support page says includes about 200 downloads a month and DAW plugins.
  • Therapy: six months of free sessions through BetterHelp, plus other wellness resources.
  • Promotion: a Fresh Finds badge on your profile, early access to some Spotify tools and features, and priority access to tour or music video partnerships with Spotify.
  • Community: in-person and virtual events with Spotify staff and Fresh Finds alumni, and a private community channel.

The support page adds conditions the announcement leaves out. The tour and video partnerships are "coming soon", open only to a limited number of US-based artists by application. The in-person summit is in Los Angeles, for selected artists. Some benefits can be redeemed only once per artist team, so a band with several admins shares one redemption. The badge sits on your public profile for only the first month after the invitation, after which a Fresh Finds icon stays in your artist details.

Is there any money?

No. Neither the announcement nor the support page mentions a grant, a stipend or a cash value, and Music Week's report doesn't give one either. Everything is in kind.

Some of it can be priced. Splice's Creator plan lists at $19.99 a month after a trial month, so six months is roughly $120 at list price. That is our estimate, not Spotify's. A day at Electric Lady is worth far more, but only if you can get to New York, Nashville or LA.

Why does Spotify say Fresh Finds matters?

All of these figures come from Spotify. It says Fresh Finds has helped more than 80,000 artists in 127 countries over more than a decade (its Loud & Clear report puts it at more than 70,000 artists from over 100 countries, so even Spotify's own figures differ), and has driven more than 128 million new artist discoveries since 2024. It also says nearly 70% of Fresh Finds streams come from listeners hearing an artist for the first time, and more than half of Fresh Finds artists later land on bigger editorial playlists such as New Music Friday or RapCaviar.

The strongest number is in Spotify's own royalty report. Loud & Clear says more than 13,800 artists earned at least $100,000 on Spotify in 2025. More than one in ten of them were first playlisted on Fresh Finds. Separately, the same page says Fresh Finds artists collectively more than double their royalties in the year after being added, compared with the year before. Those $100,000 figures are gross earnings before labels, distributors and publishers take their share, as MBW notes.

What we think

The playlist is still the product. The perks are mostly wrapping. Our reading of Spotify's own data is that the money comes from the editorial pipeline: Fresh Finds placement, then the bigger playlists. Membership mainly tells you that you are on the editors' radar for the next year. Early access to tools and priority for partnerships are worth more than a software bundle, but they are also the vaguest items on the list.

It is a US programme with global eligibility. Spotify's own data says about 85% of the artists who crossed $100,000 in 2025 were based outside the US. Yet the two most valuable in-person benefits, studio time and the tour and video partnerships, are only for US-based artists. An artist in Lagos, Manila or Mumbai gets the badge, the software and the community channel. We think Spotify should say when the studio and partnership offers will reach other markets, or say plainly that they won't.

Read the BetterHelp terms before you sign up. Free therapy for musicians is a good idea, and we're glad mental health is on the list at all. But in 2023 the US Federal Trade Commission alleged that BetterHelp had shared users' health questionnaire answers and email addresses with Facebook and others for advertising, after promising not to. Under a proposed order, BetterHelp had to pay $7.8 million. Artists should know that history before they choose a provider for six months of sessions.

The second-order effect is lock-in. Every benefit points you to Spotify or its partners: LANDR and Splice subscriptions that are free for a fixed period, Spotify-run events and Spotify tools. None of that is sinister. But it sits next to a royalty system where a track earns nothing below 1,000 streams a year, and next to quarterly results in which Spotify pointed musicians to this programme rather than to data about their fans. The winners are the 10,000 a year who get picked, US-based artists most of all. The other Fresh Finds artists and everyone not on a playlist get a reminder that on Spotify, editorial attention is still the gatekeeper. If you are invited, take it, use the studio time if you can, and check what the software deals cost once the free period ends before you build a workflow around them.
