We are the music makers (WATMM) is a news site and a directory of music-technology tools. This page explains how we are funded and how we keep that separate from what we write.

How we make money

• Affiliate links. Some links to tools, plug-ins and services are affiliate links. If you buy through one, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you.
• Sponsored listings. Tool makers can pay for a verified or featured listing in the directory.
• Newsletter sponsorships and advertising. We may sell sponsorship of our newsletter and, where it applies, advertising on the site.

Editorial independence

Our editorial decisions are made independently of our advertisers, sponsors and affiliate partners. Payment, or the chance of a commission, never changes a ranking, a score, a recommendation or what we write. We do not sell rankings or scores, and payment information is never used when a tool is scored or placed in a best-of list. How we compare tools is described in how we test and rank, and our rules for writing are in the editorial policy.

How paid and affiliate content is labelled

• Paid placements are labelled "Sponsored" or "Featured".
• Pages with affiliate links carry the line: "We may earn a commission if you buy through some links on this page. It never changes what we recommend or how we score."
• Paid and affiliate links are marked rel="sponsored". Free listings use rel="nofollow".

Free listings and third-party tools

A listing or a mention is not an endorsement. We list tools whether or not they pay, and we link to third-party sites we do not control.

Tools and AI assistance

We use AI to help research and draft some pieces. A person checks and edits everything we publish, and each post names its editor.

Corrections

If we get something wrong, we fix it and record it in the public corrections log.
