What we think — By WATMM Desk —

Spotify says every artist gets Artist Profile Protection by year end. We think it ships, without an appeal route

What we think: Spotify's promise to give every artist a way to approve releases before they appear on their profile is the most concrete fix for AI impersonation any big service has offered. We think it ships on time, but the recommendation filter that decides who gets heard will still come with no published error rate and no appeal route.

Spotify says Artist Profile Protection, now a beta with thousands of artists, will be available to all artists by the end of 2026. We expect it on time. We also make our first scored prediction, about the part Spotify has not promised.

On 20 Oct 2026 Spotify said that Artist Profile Protection, which lets artists "review releases that list them as an artist when they're delivered to Spotify", is in beta with thousands of artists opted in, and that it is "making the tool available to all artists by the end of the year."

That is the right fix for the most visible AI problem in streaming: tracks uploaded under a real artist's name. It gives the artist, in Spotify's words, "the final say over what appears on their profile." A review step before release is more useful than any takedown after one.

What is still missing?

The same post says Spotify took "more than 50 million slop and spam tracks out of recommendations" this year, and admits that "AI detection technology in particular has limitations." It gives no error rate for those decisions and no way for an artist to learn that a track was filtered or to appeal.

Deezer shows a number is possible. Its July post says its detector may wrongly flag "fewer than 1 track out of every 10,000 genuine human-made tracks." It is Deezer's own figure for its own tool, but it is a figure.

Profile protection guards an artist's name. A recommendation filter decides whether anyone hears the music. The second matters more to a working producer, and it is the one with no published line.

Our prediction

We are starting to keep score of our own calls, the way forecasting platforms such as Good Judgment Open score every forecaster with Brier scores on questions that resolve. Here is our first one, on the record and dated:

By 31 Mar 2027, Spotify will have made Artist Profile Protection available to all artists, but will not have published a false-positive rate for its AI or spam recommendation filtering, nor an appeal route for artists whose tracks are filtered.

We will score it right only if all three parts hold, partly if the tool ships but Spotify also publishes an error rate or an appeal route, and wrong if the tool has not reached all artists by that date. The check is Spotify's newsroom and its artist support pages on 31 Mar 2027. It sits on our predictions ledger, which will show it scored, right or wrong.
