Spotify's superfan tier still hasn't arrived, but Reserved tickets have. How artists get their top fans picked
Spotify's reported "Music Pro" superfan add-on, at up to $5.99 a month extra, has still not launched in the West. Instead, Reserved went live in the US on 18 June 2026: two tickets per tour held for top fans, inside ordinary Premium, through Live Nation. Here is what is confirmed, what is only reported, and what artists can actually do.
Key facts
- What happened: Reserved by Spotify launched in the US on 18 Jun 2026 with Live Nation as launch partner, holding up to two tickets per tour for eligible Premium fans aged 18+, at no extra cost; Role Model was the first artist. Spotify added Canada on 17 Aug 2026.
- How: Spotify picks fans from engagement over time (streams, saves, shares, active listening, tenure), notifies them by email and in-app, and gives a window of about a day to buy through Ticketmaster. It does not publish the full method.
- Why it matters: the paid "Music Pro" tier reported by Bloomberg in Feb 2025 has not launched in the West, so Spotify is putting fan perks into base Premium. For artists, being on a Live Nation tour and having properly listed shows now decides who can reach these fans.
For two years the music business has talked about a Spotify "superfan tier". What arrived on 18 June 2026 was something else. Reserved by Spotify launched in the US with indie-pop artist Role Model as the first act. It holds tour tickets for an artist's most engaged listeners, and it costs fans nothing beyond ordinary Premium.
That distinction matters for artists. A paid tier would have been a new revenue pool. A free perk inside Premium is a retention tool for Spotify, and a new way for fans to be sorted.
What is confirmed, and what is only reported?
Confirmed by Spotify or Live Nation:
- Reserved was announced at Spotify's Investor Day on 21 May 2026: two tour tickets held for Premium subscribers before general sale, with Live Nation as launch partner and more markets to follow.
- Live Nation's announcement says fans are picked using streams, shares and listening activity, and can buy up to two tickets in a limited-time window.
- Spotify's own FAQ says fans must be Premium subscribers aged 18 or over, Spotify adds no fees, and ticket prices are set by the artist and their team. An update dated 17 August 2026 says Reserved is now also available in Canada.
- In its Q2 2026 shareholder update, Spotify said nearly 100,000 tickets had been reserved since launch, across multiple tours.
Reported, not confirmed by Spotify:
- "Music Pro". In February 2025 Bloomberg reported, as summarised by MBW, that Spotify planned an add-on costing up to $5.99 a month on top of Premium, with early ticket access, AI remix features and better audio. MBW noted Spotify had not announced it. The name itself came from Universal Music's Boyd Muir in November 2024, not from Spotify. As of 23 October 2026 we found no launch. Spotify's Investor Day recap does not use the words "superfan" or "Music Pro".
- The money. MBW cites Bloomberg as reporting that Spotify is paying "tens of millions of dollars" for early-access ticketing rights. Neither company has confirmed a figure.
Where did the superfan tier go?
Spotify has taken the perks people expected in a paid tier and put them into base Premium. MBW points out that lossless audio went into standard Premium in September 2025. Reserved is now included too. Charlie Hellman, Spotify's head of music, told MBW the company is still exploring paid add-ons for niche audiences.
The paid add-on that does exist is the AI covers and remix tool, which Spotify's Investor Day recap describes as "a paid add-on for Spotify Premium users". We looked at who consents to that in our piece on the remix tool.
Outside the West, Spotify did test a pricier tier. Premium Platinum launched in November 2025 in India, Indonesia, the UAE, Saudi Arabia and South Africa. In India it costs ₹299 a month and includes lossless audio, the AI DJ, AI playlists and DJ software integrations. It has no ticketing element. In May 2026 Spotify scrapped the Lite tier and cut Standard to ₹139 in India, leaving Platinum at ₹299. Spotify has so far named only the US and Canada as Reserved markets, so Indian fans and artists are not in it.
How does Spotify decide who is a "top fan"?
Spotify won't publish the full method, which it says is to stop people gaming it. What it has said is enough to act on:
- Hellman told MBW the signals include sharing, saving, active listening, how often and how regularly someone listens, how long they have been a fan, and whether the activity looks human. "It's not as simple as total stream volume," he said.
- The FAQ says selection is not a lottery and that "leaving music on in the background won't give anyone a leg up". Eligibility updates in real time, and unclaimed tickets pass to the next-most-dedicated fans.
- Spotify says the top 2% of an artist's monthly audience account for half of artist ticket sales through the platform. That is Spotify's own figure, not an audited one.
What should artists do?
You cannot sign yourself up. At launch, Spotify for Artists says Reserved covers select Live Nation tours in North America, and we found no public artist application. What you can control:
- Get your shows listed. Spotify lists concerts automatically from partner ticketers such as Ticketmaster, AXS, Eventim and BookMyShow. If your ticketer isn't a partner, upload the dates to Bandsintown, which generates the Spotify listing. Then search your own artist name in the app and check the dates appear.
- Ask your agent or promoter directly whether your tour is in Reserved, and how many tickets are held per market. Spotify says the number varies by artist, tour and market.
- Grow the signals Spotify names. Ask fans to save and share, not to loop a track in the background. By Spotify's own account, background listening doesn't count towards selection.
- Never buy streams. Spotify checks that activity is human and can claw tickets back from anyone gaming it.
- Brief your fans. Offers usually arrive by email or push notification a few days before the on-sale. The FAQ tells fans to turn on notifications for live events and enable location in the Live Events Feed.
- Watch the numbers. Spotify for Artists analytics show how fans engage with your concert listings.
Checklist before an on-sale:
- Every date shows on your Spotify artist profile
- Promoter has confirmed whether Reserved applies, and in which markets
- Fan post explains Premium, 18+, notifications and location settings
- Release-week asks are "save" and "share", not "stream on repeat"
- No paid playlist or stream services anywhere near the campaign
What we think
Reserved is good for fans and a fair answer to bots and resale markups. But artists should be clear about who it serves first.
It is a subscriber perk, not new artist income. For an act big enough to be on a Live Nation tour, we think most of these tickets would have sold anyway. Spotify adds no fee and the artist sets the price, which is welcome. But the value created, a reason to keep paying for Premium, goes to Spotify. Spotify's Rene Volker said Reserved "changes what it means to be a subscriber". That is a statement about Spotify's business, not artists'.
The gate is Live Nation. For now, only artists on Live Nation tours can reach these fans. An independent act playing clubs through a local promoter gets nothing from it yet, however loyal its listeners. Spotify says it will add partners and venues "from cozy clubs to massive stadiums", but has given no dates. We have written about why Live Nation's control of the big rooms is the issue that matters to artists. An exclusive Spotify deal adds to it.
The paid tier stalled, and that's telling. In our reading, Spotify could not make a separate superfan price work in the West, so it spent money on perks that keep everyone paying the base price. If Music Pro does come back, artists and their labels should ask the question nobody has answered: how much of that extra $5.99 reaches the people the fans are paying for.
Until then, the practical move is simple. List every show, ask your promoter, and give fans a reason to save rather than loop.
